It was extremely shameful of Japan not to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons, even the former PM (his electoral district was Hiroshima). I think the government is on a more shameful position than before.
The Seto Inland Sea is my home. I was born in 1949 around the area hit by the atomic bomb being exposed to radiation. Two classmates passed away caused by bone cancer in their youth. As the Nobel Foundation said it's not possible for humanbeings to coexist with nuclear weapons.
I rarely see the NIHON HIDANKYO (被団協) in the media in Japan. 'The Japan Confederation of A-and H-Bomb sufferers organization'
It remind me that Taro Kono didn't sign up current Treaty for the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
As far as Patriotism like America first continues, abolition of nuclear weapons is not realistic. Any leaders are afraid to be threatened or attacked, then do not agree to abolish or even decrease the weapons.
I'd like to congratulate Nihon Hidankyo on winning the Nobel peace prize. Their award makes all of the people in Japan realize we should continue our efforts to advocate that nuclear weapons must never be used again.
In the meantime, I wonder how much impact the award has on the real world. What has changed since ICAN won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017? Has the war in Ukraine ended? Why did the brutal war in the middle east have to begin again? Sure, they haven't used nuclear weapons yet, but when will peace prevail in the world? Does the Nobel Peace Prize mean anything to those warring countries where people desparately need peace? --Probably, sadly, nothing.
